Jason Turtel

The subjects of what and who I paint varies, but most of what I do is portraiture. Subjects like the Rocky movies, Scarface, Michael Jordan, and Kiss inspire me in different ways. Rocky is a visual story, but it also strikes an emotional chord from the power of the story behind it. Scarface is full of so many characters, so many faces and expressions. Every frame is a photograph.

The subject matter is endless. The Michael Jordan flu game of 1997 is an incredible sports story. It captures the spirit of teammates inspiring me to paint Scottie and Michael. Pop culture, music, and entertainment present a host of interesting subjects to paint: The Sopranos, The Godfather, and Van Halen just to name a few.

It’s all about portraiture. I make some kind of connection with the person I’m depicting. A person’s face captures my interest. I interpret what I see and reconstruct it into my own reality. This is not realism, it’s ‘expressionism’. I’m not trying to convince the viewer that this is not paint. My style is a kind of hybrid of many styles.

Reviews

  • I find Jason Turtel's abstracts inspiring. I find his use of primary colours and his use of paint drips to be passionately flagrant and unique. I'm equally thrilled by his portraits, which I find unconventional and yet dramatically reflective of his subjects.
